Book ’em, Danno–Episode 17

Season 2 of Hawaii Five-O continues with episode 7 “Sweet Terror” and episode 8 “King Kamehameha Blues”. In the former we have a fun terror plot run by an eccentric bad-guy-for-hire and in the latter we have a group of college kids “putting the squeeze on the establishment” with a daring theft.

The fun part of watching these episodes in order is that you get pairs like this one in which I really loved one episode and totally loathed the other. “Sweet Terror” features Theodore Bikel as a fun villain with a certain air of sophistication and Soon Tek Oh is back playing another not-so-nice character. “King Kamehameha Blues” just straight up gives me the blues.

You can listen to my raving and ranting on Soundcloud or iTunes.

Instead of a picture from one of the episodes, here’s a pic of King Kamehameha I’s cloak. You can read all about how it was made here.

Book ’em Danno–Episode 16

I’ve got two more second season episodes for you. “Savage Sunday” pulls Five-O in on their day off to take on some Latin American revolutionaries and “A Bullet for McGarrett” features a seriously mesmerizing Eric Braeden. But then, isn’t he always? There’s a soap opera worthy subplot that has nothing to do with the soap opera vet and a surprise appearance by Wo Fat. Listen on Soundcloud and iTunes to see which episode has which.

Apologies for the background noise. The neighborhood insisted on being particularly loud while I was recording. As if I’m not loud enough as it is.

Please enjoy this picture of Kono on his day off as compensation.

September Projects

It seems like after March and April, the months have just flown by and I have very little to show for it when it comes to writing.

Writing has been hard for me the past few years and the pandemic did not help. Sorry, ‘Rona. I know you tried by giving me a month off work, but it turns out I couldn’t capitalize on that like I’d hoped/planned/wanted.

However, as slow as I’m working and as little as I’m working on, I still count progress as progress and accomplishments as accomplishments. I keep hoping these little bright spots will lead me to the light.

This month I should wrap up the first draft of Early Snow. It’s turned out to be a decent novella, I think.

And then I’m going to work on a couple of short projects.

As luck would have it, a contest and an anthology looking for submissions both crossed my path. The contest challenges folks to write a story in 100 words, which I used to do all the time when I was doing fandom drabbles. And the anthology is a themed horror affair, something I’ve always found myself gifted at. I don’t presently have ideas for either of them, but the contest deadline isn’t until October and the anthology submission deadline isn’t until December. I have faith that I will be able to come up with something for both of these before the month is out.

Sad that it feels like I’m overestimating myself.

The bad news is that Murderville: The Coldest Case has ended. The very good news is that patrons can get the eBook on September 15th. And it’s not too late for you to become a patron, too. There’s one season left of Murderville, so don’t wait. Become a patron now. $1 an episode lets you read and gets you the eBook. $2 an episode lets you read, gets you the ebook, and gets you a sweet bonus every other month.

Episode 15 of Book ’em, Danno is live and episode 16 will arrive at the end of the month. In the latest, Wo-Fat is back, and there’s some trouble with an uncooperative witness. Listen, rate, review, share, like, tell your friends, shove it in your family’s ears. Any support is appreciated. In other podcasting news, I’m back on Eventually Supertrain, chatting with Dan about Automan. Listen in. We’re delightful.

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 15

It’s episode 15 of Book ’em, Danno and season 2 is just getting started. In episode 3, “Forty Feet High and It Kills!”, Wo Fat is back, baby, and he’s kidnapping…Grandpa Walton? And in episode 4, “Just Lucky, I Guess”, Five-O finds themselves looking for a killer and a witness. Come for my excessive praise. Stay for my complaining.

Listen on Soundcloud and iTunes.

Behinds the scenes note: When I record Book ’em, Danno, I’ve found it most effective for me to record my blathering about the first episode I cover on one day and then the second episode the next. It’s less stressful and it saves my voice. However, this episode, for whatever reason, my voice was kind of rough when I started talking about “Just Lucky I Guess” and ended up straying into phone sex operator territory by the end of it. Sorry about that. To be clear, I wasn’t intentionally trying to arouse anyone while talking about John Randolph’s credits.

To keep this from getting even more awkward, he’s a picture of Steve (not from either of the episodes) embarrassed to be associated with me.

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 14

Season 2 is underway!

We start off with a murderous life insurance scheme (that’s not deadly in the way you think) in “A Thousand Pardons–You’re Dead!” and continue on with a man carrying out a plot twenty-eight years too late in “To Hell With Babe Ruth”. Danno goes undercover and Steve learns about ninjas. Kicking off the season in style.

Yes, it only takes two episodes until we once again get a heavy dose of racist casting, but we also get some gratuitous James MacArthur and BarBara Luna frolicking on the beach, so. I’m not saying it balances out. I’m just saying that with this series, we have to take the good with the bad.

Anyway, listen on Souncloud or iTunes.

I’d post a pic of the beach frolicking, but that might be too much for you. So, here’s a picture of Danno in uniform. Which also might be too much for you.

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 13

It’s the final episode of season one, “The Big Kahuna”, and a quick little look back on the season. We’ve got the Pele the Goddess of Fire attempting to evict one of the last members of Hawaiian royalty from his house (or so it would seem) and I’ve been keeping track of all of the times Steve McGarrett has uttered the words “Book ’em, Danno”.

Oh, and if you usually don’t pay attention to and/or skip through the guest cast info, you may want to listen this time. There’s a hidden gem or two in there that you might appreciate.

And you can do that on Soundcloud or iTunes.

Thanks for hanging out with me for the first season. I did say that getting through season one would be the test of whether or not I’d stick with this podcast. And since I did, I guess I will. On to season two!

I don’t have any pics from this episode, so here’s a picture of happy Kono because who doesn’t love happy Kono?

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 12

The first season of Hawaii Five-O is winding down with episode 22 “Not That Much Different” and episode 23 “Six Kilos”. Only one episode left! Can you believe it?

But first, Steve and the rest of Five-O have to contend with a shooting involving some peace demonstrators, and then he has to go undercover to capture some criminals plotting a big heist.

Check it out by listening on Souncloud or iTunes.

And here are your visual aids in regards to Steve’s undercover wardrobe. You will never find anything more marvelous.

Until you see Steve’s later wardrobe choices.

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 11

Another long episode, but this time not because of a special guest, but because I’m covering three first season episodes: “Along Came Joey” and the two-parter “Once Upon a Time”. Gird your loins. Not just for the overload of episodes, but also because they’re all emotionally draining. In “Along Came Joey”, Frank DeKova is a Maui lieutenant turned avenging angel when his son is killed. And then in “Once Upon a Time”, Steve goes after the quack doctor who has preyed on his sister and her son.

It’s pretty somber episode, folks. Listen on Soundcloud or iTunes.

I don’t have any pics from these eps, so here’s a picture of Frank DeKova (left) as Chief Wild Eagle on F-Troop.

March Writing Projects

I regret to inform you that my March writing projects are the same as February’s. I will continue to revise The Support Group Meets on Wednesday because my days of revising a novel-length manuscript in a month are pretty much over. I got addicted to the self-care practice of not driving myself crazy and stressing myself out over trying to finish something that I could take my time with. I can take my time with this. It’ll be okay.

I do admit that it’s starting to weigh on me that I haven’t published something, traditionally or self, in quite a while. There’s this growing niggle about it in the back of my brain. There was a time when I was putting out at least one new title a year. Now, I think the last time I published anything was back in 2018 when Come to the Rocks came out (edit: I totally forgot that Take a Bite came out after that…dumbass me). Sure, Murderville continues, but does that count? Not really.

I think part of my trouble is that I’m still struggling to find an ideal writing/day job/podcasting balance, so my output of anything hasn’t been nearly what I would like. I haven’t mastered the shifting priority status required to get it all done efficiently.

I imagine that I will eventually fall to the pressure to produce once again. But until I succumb, I’ll enjoy being able to work without that self-imposed stress.

Speaking of Murderville, which isn’t at all stressful, episode three of The Coldest Case goes live on March 10. Don’t miss out! Become a patron! $1 an episode let’s you read and $2 an episode gets you a sweet, sweet bonus every other month.

Also, the latest episode of Book ’em, Danno went live just a couple of days ago. Be sure to give that a listen and give some love to not only me and the show, but also my super awesome guest, Dan Budnik. After all, there wouldn’t be a podcast dedicated to me rambling on about a fifty year old show without him. Which reminds me, episode 11 should be out before the end of the month. So, stay tuned.

Book ’em, Danno–Episode 10

An extra long, extra special episode. Dan Budnik from the Eventually Supertrain podcast joins me to talk about two of my favorite first season episodes, “The Box” and “One for the Money”. Gavin MacLeod is back as Big Chicken fluffing his feathers in a prison shower standoff and Jeanette Nolan rules the roost over her nephews…until she doesn’t.

Spoiler alert! We do talk endings in this ep. “The Box” spoilers happen from about 50:34 to about 58:27. “One for the Money” spoilers are discussed from about 1:53:04 to 1:59:38. I give you a heads-up during the chat, too, so consider yourselves warned.

Join Dan and I for this super fun talk on Soundcloud and iTunes. We’re delightful.

This episode is the Full MacLeod.
